NOCTURNAL animals prefer nighttime to carry out their activities. Nocturnal animals are endowed with special characteristics that help their vision at night. They have large eyes furnished with rods, a kind of cells that are extremely sensitive to light, but do not respond to colors as such. Some have very large pupils and special measures to close the pupils in bright sunlight. They also have a reflecting tapetum behind the retina, which reflects the light and strikes the rods. Bats and shrews rely as well on their auditory and olfactory senses to operate at nightfall.
